The Rules of the Road in Da Nang
Something you need to know to survive Hi friends, traveling to a completely strange place is really stressful, especially when in some cases where you don’t have any information about
the area, traffic is a great example, but I am here to help you figure out a way of navigating the traffic when you come to my hometown -Da Nang.
There is something that you need to know before visiting the beautiful city.
1. Drive on the right
The first thing you need to know is that like for the Americans and the Chinese; people must drive on the right; therefore, it is hard for tourists who come from countries like the UK and Australia who drive on the left.
Another thing is that the helmet is mandatory and that includes the rest of Vietnam. This is applied in Danang more stringently which means the police are more likely to fine people than other cities in Vietnam.
With regards to the police in Danang who wear the same green and yellow uniform as everywhere else, a number of tourists who have visited the city have noted how nice the police are. This is because they usually warn visitors at first and show them the right way to drive, instead of fining straightaway.
2. Motorbike
Let me tell you that the maximum number of motorbike passengers is just two adults, so make sure you rent enough motorbikes as the limits are strictly adhered to.
If you visit Da Nang with your family, you should rent a car, but it is quite expensive to rent a car for the day (about $50) compared to just $2-$5 of that of motorbike so I strongly suggest renting motorbikes as the cheapest option.
3. The city of traffic lights
Danang is also known as the city of the traffic lights. The fact that you are probably going to stop at least eight times on a 5- km route. The best advice I can give is to be patient, especially when you have to wait during the scorching hot days of the summer here as it can hit 40C thanks to the concrete roads..
Consequently, a hat, a coat, a pair of sunglasses, and some sun cream are essential items to have in your backpack.
4. One-way roads
Da Nang is a sprawling city so traffic is getting crazier due to the increase in the number of vehicles. Consequently, the local government has decided to gradually turn two-way streets in the center of Danang into one-way roads. In the short-term, it will undoubtedly lead to more traffic as people adjust so you have to pay your attention to traffic signs in the streets. However, this is good news; as the locals and police here are super nice and friendly as they will tell you which road is one-way street so don’t worry when you get lost in a matrix of one-way roads here.
5. Crossing the roads
This is the craziest and funniest part of any section when people decide to visit Vietnam but don’t be afraid, compared to the traffic in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh city, traffic in Da Nang is far more peaceful literally. However, you also have to follow some rules to cross the road safely.
Firstly, if you are not the adventurous type person, just stop here! The best and easiest way is that you can simply tag along with a local guy or police officer. Yeah I mean, seriously you have to stick to them to cross the road without physically and mentally being damaged! Of course, you should walk the pedestrian zone without any fear.
Are you still reading? Well, so you might choose the fun option and so follow the steps below.
Step 1: Be brave, really really brave, and then take a deep breath.
Step 2: Raise your hand in the air and go for it.
You also need to know an “unspoken rule” of Vietnamese traffic. People just use horns to alert, and they are not angry like some other Western countries, so do not freak out by the noise. Besides, moving suddenly forwards or backwards is also frowned upon as motorists are not able to anticipate your movement, which could be a trigger for an accident. When you feel safe enough, you can rush to the nearest pavement.
To conclude, these are five essential things that you have to know before choosing Da Nang as your attraction. I hope you enjoy this beautiful and fantastic city. I am sure that you will fall in love to my hometown soon.
