THE SACRED PAGODAS IN DA NANG

Da Nang is the most modern and energetic city in the Central Region, with a sprightly rhythm of life. Still, there is a solemn spiritual angle of Da Nang which has existed for hundreds of years, preserved conscientiously in the aged pagodas in the city for many generations. If you want to understand more about Da Nang, an adventure to the sacred pagodas will be such an extraordinary cultural experience toward the stories that are even older than the city itself.

LINH ỨNG TRINITY:

Linh Ứng Trinity is the local nickname of three Linh Ứng pagodas in Da Nang, which located on three holy mountains: Marble Mountain, Son Tra Mountain and Nui Chua Mountain. If you connect these three pagodas on the city map, you can recognize that their positions form a triangle fully covering the ocean of Da Nang. People of Da Nang believe that this triangle is a holy spiritual shield that protects Da Nang city from natural disasters in the recent decade.

The gigantic Quang Ying statue in the Linh Ung pagoda on the Son Tra Mountain is one of the
most sacred symbols of Da Nang city. The Buddha faces the ocean to protect the people,
especially the fishermen from typhoons which happen every year.

Though being built in a unified architecture, each of Linh Ung pagoda still has a
unique beauty, which is enthusiastic to both tourists and local people.

The Linh Ung pagoda on Marble Mountain is the oldest one, which has exíted for around 300 years. This ancient pagoda is not only one of the very first Budishm sanctuary of Da Na city but also contains many relics and old folktale related to the Emperors of Viet Nam in the 18th century.

Meanwhile, the Linh Ung pagoda on Son Tra mountain is the youngest and also the biggest among the family. It is the home of the 67-metter-high (220 ft) Quang Ying statue, the highest statue of “the Lady Buddha” in SouthEast Asia.

The Linh Ung – Nui Chua is the most beautiful pagoda as the recommendation of many visitors. Being built in the area of Ba Na Hills, this pagoda settled in one of the most gorgeous peaks of Da Nang, with a fantastic panoramic view toward the ocean.

PHO DA PAGODA

In 1915, a small temple named Pho Thien was established on a small hill near the Han river. After 20 years, the temple changed the name into Pho Da Pagoda, which means Buddha in Sanskrit, and developed into the Branch Central Institute of Buddhism Study. Since then, Pho Da Pagoda is well-known as the Buddhism studying center of the Central region.

Unlike other famous pagodas in Da Nang city, Pho Da pagoda, as a Buddhism academy, is calm and solemn with a spiritual aura. You may feel the breath of religion when roaming through the front yard, main hall or sanctum of the architecture. It is from which many admirable monks have practiced and studied Mahayana Sutra for decades.

TAM BAO PAGODA

Tam Bao Pagoda is the very first and only Theravada Buddhism pagoda in the Central Region, which makes it not only an exclusive temple of Da Nang city but also the sanctuary of all Southern-style Buddhists in the Central of Viet Nam.  While the majority follow Mahayana, also called the Northern-style-Buddhism, Tam Bao Pagoda belief has contributed to diversity in spiritual practicing of people in Da Nang.

In the front yard of the pagoda stand five great polls, each of which bears a different colour presenting for five colours of Buddhism: Blue, yellow, red, white and orange.

Tam Bao pagoda was built in 10 years from 1953 to 1963. As the origin of Southern-style Buddhism in the Central Region, there are many holy relics and antiques conserved at Tam Bao Pagoda. The wooden altar in the Main Hall is a precious venerated present from the Royal Family of Thailand. The garden of the pagoda is home of two bodhi trees which are extracted from the sacred Bodhi in which Sakyamuni Buddha got enlightened.

There are many divine pagodas and temples in Da Nang, which deliver the peace and solemn colours to the overall view of the city. Roaming to the religion architectures is a good approaching path toward the local culture. Therefore, you can deeply understand the story of Da Nang.
